Common Side Effects

• Daytime drowsiness and lethargy (a next-day “hangover” effect)
• Dizziness and lightheadedness
• Loss of balance or coordination (ataxia), which increases the risk of falls and fractures, especially in older adults
• Headache
• Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea
• Nervousness or irritability
• Dry mouth or bitter taste 

Serious Risks and Warnings

• Abuse, Misuse, and Addiction: Flurazepam has the potential for abuse and can be habit-forming. The risk is higher for individuals with a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
• Dependence and Withdrawal: Abruptly stopping flurazepam after continued use can lead to life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, tremors, abdominal/muscle cramps, vomiting, and severe anxiety. Discontinuation should involve a gradual dose taper as directed by a doctor.
• Complex Sleep-Related Behaviors: People may engage in activities like “sleep-driving,” sleepwalking, making food, or talking on the phone while not fully awake, with no memory of the event afterward.
• Mental and Behavioral Changes: Flurazepam may cause new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, or unusual excitement.
• Severe Allergic Reactions (Angioedema): Although rare, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat can occur and may be fatal due to airway obstruction.
